Dogs hit puberty around 6-12 months. By the 7-year rule, that'd make a 1-year-old dog equivalent to a 7-year-old child. In reality, a 1-year-old dog is more like a 15-year-old teenager — physically mature and capable of breeding. The 7-year rule also breaks at the other end. It'd tell you a 15-year-old Chihuahua is 105 in human years. Meanwhile, plenty of Chihuahuas hit 15 and still trot around like they own the place. More like a spry 76-year-old.

The AKC Breed-Size Formula

Plug in a 1-year-old dog: 16 × ln(1) + 31 = 31. Wait, that seems low, right? The natural log of 1 is zero. But remember — this study was on Labradors, a large breed. A 1-year-old Lab is sexually mature. The formula works better for dogs 2+, where the log curve starts making sense. A 5-year-old dog: 16 × ln(5) + 31 ≈ 56 human years.

This is the most scientifically rigorous method we have right now. But it was only validated on one breed, so applying it to a Chihuahua or an Irish Wolfhound might be off.
