How to Calculate Dog Years to Human Years
The idea that one dog year equals seven human years is a myth. The truth is more interesting — and varies by breed size.
Dogs age much faster than humans in their first two years. A 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, regardless of breed. After that, the rate depends on their size: smaller breeds age more slowly than larger ones.

Why Size Matters
Large and giant breeds age faster because their bodies grow rapidly, which increases cellular stress and oxidative damage. A Great Dane reaches old age around 7–8 years, while a Chihuahua may not be considered senior until 11–12 years.
- Toy breeds (<10 lbs): Often live 14–18 years. Enter senior stage around 11 years.
- Small breeds (10–25 lbs): Live 12–16 years. Enter senior stage around 10–11 years.
- Medium breeds (26–50 lbs): Live 10–14 years. Enter senior stage around 9–10 years.
- Large breeds (51–90 lbs): Live 9–12 years. Enter senior stage around 8 years.
- Giant breeds (>90 lbs): Live 8–11 years. Enter senior stage around 7 years.
