Mixed Breed vs Purebred Dogs: Which Live Longer? What the Research Shows
If you've ever heard someone say "mutts are healthier," they're not wrong — but the full story is messier than the slogan suggests. Mixed breed dogs do live longer on average, by about 1.2 years according to multiple large-scale studies. But the size of the advantage depends on what you're comparing them to, and not all mixed breeds are created equal.

A 2013 study from UC Davis analyzed health records of over 27,000 dogs across 24 genetic disorders and found that 10 disorders were significantly more common in purebreds — including dilated cardiomyopathy, elbow dysplasia, and cataracts. Only one disorder (cranial cruciate ligament rupture) was more common in mixed breeds.
What the Lifespan Data Actually Says
The most cited study comes from a 2019 analysis of veterinary records across over 100,000 dogs, published in Canine Genetics and Epidemiology. The median lifespan for mixed breed dogs was 14.45 years, compared to 13.21 years for purebreds — a difference of approximately 1.2 years, or about 9% longer.
But here's the thing people gloss over: the gap is much wider when comparing mixed breeds to purebreds with known health problems. A mixed breed versus a healthy working-line purebred (like a Border Collie from farm stock, not a show line) narrows to almost nothing. The purebred health crisis is concentrated in certain breeds — Bulldogs, Pugs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Dobermans — where closed studbooks and extreme conformation standards have concentrated genetic disease to crisis levels.
Designer Dogs vs True Mutts
A Labradoodle isn't the same thing as an old-fashioned mutt. Designer crossbreeds (Goldendoodles, Cockapoos, Puggles, etc.) are first-generation crosses of two purebred parents — which means they inherit the closed-gene-pool problems of both sides. A Labradoodle gets the Lab's hip dysplasia risk and the Poodle's Addison's disease risk. The hybrid vigor benefit is real for recessive disorders, but it does nothing for dominant traits or complex polygenic conditions that both parent breeds share.
True multi-generational mutts — the kind that have been breeding freely for generations — have the deepest genetic diversity and the strongest heterosis effect. These dogs have been reshuffled so many times that single-breed genetic disorders get diluted to near-zero. If pure lifespan is your priority, the scrappy shelter mutt with no discernible breed origin probably wins over the $3000 designer doodle.
Which Purebreds Are Actually Healthy?
Not all purebreds are genetic disaster zones. Working-line breeds — those still selected for performance rather than appearance — tend to be much healthier. Australian Cattle Dogs, Border Collies from working stock, Siberian Huskies, and Belgian Malinois generally have low rates of congenital disease because breeders prioritize function over form. Show-line breeds with extreme conformation (brachycephalic faces, exaggerated sloping backs, excessive skin folds) are the ones with the real problems.
Even within troubled breeds, outcross programs are starting to make a difference. Size Still Trumps Breed Status

A small purebred (like a Miniature Poodle or a Shih Tzu) will almost always outlive a large mixed breed (like a 90-pound Shepherd mix).
